I read Winter People when I was in rehab because we had a lot of free time and someone had left it there. I loved it!

I totally agree with you on Home Before Dark. There were a few scenes in there that had me scared. I mean checking behind me scared!

Dear Gabby! Old lady over here. The first video I ever watched of you was the one with Night Film. I never read anything scary. I loved that book. So clever! I will try Pen Pal! Wish me luck sweetie. Say hi to your sweet family! 😘👋🏻💖

I’ve just finished Grady Hendrix’s How To Sell a Haunted House and have My Best Friend’s Exorcism on order at my library. I think either would be good for a beginner. I’ve also read T Kingfisher’s House with Good Bones. I think that has quite a humorous vibe and a very engaging main character with a light hint of romance, all of which would be good for a beginner. I may add Winter People to my list and Pen Pals. My granddaughters did the note in the balloon thing when they were in grade school. I’m also just into my first Riley Sager- The Only One Left. Your excitement is so contagious I’ll orobablt end up with all of them on my to read list.

Growing up I was obsessed with Stephen King books, I think I was about 8-9 when I picked up my first one. For a beginner Salem's Lot would be a good one if someone enjoys a slow burn with a classical monster. Another one of his is The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon since its about a young girl who gets lost in the woods and there are a couple of things that happen in the book where you have to question if its actual spooky things happening or if she's hallucinating.

Non Stephen King books I'd recommend is the Dracula by Bram Stoker. Loved it in high school and if you can get passed the writing style its honestly a good book and its a classic, and can possible encourage someone to start reading other classics like Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. If you're more into comics and need something easy Through the Woods by Emily Carroll is a good choice. The art style is lovely and its an anthology with 5 stories and since they're comics they are quick reads. I'm not sure if this would count as horror but if you're more into apocalyptic settings I Am Legend by Richard Matheson is a must. It follows a protagonist who survives YEARS after a virus outbreak and we're along for the journey about how he deals with lost, isolation and adapting over those years and its only 160 pages long but there is so much in those 160 pages it honestly feels like a longer story but in a good way.

Great list! The two books that got me back into reading horror a few years ago after a long time away were The Invited by Jennifer McMahon and My Best Friend's Exorcism 😃 I could not put them down! and now I read 150 books a year haha

I would also recommend Darcy Coates and Simone St. James for beginners. I have read all of these except The Troop (don't know if I can stomach that one 😉) and they are all great.

Love all your videos and I keep a list of all your suggestions in the notes section on my phone! I am a retired English teacher and you have inspired me to start a book vlog! It will be coming in January: The Reading Maven! Thanks for all the inspiration! I love horror films and have recently begun exploring horror novels! Thanks for the suggestions!

I am already a few steps ahead of the game since I have read quite a few of these. Maybe I can safely say I am ready for the genre.

I read Stolen Tongues because of you, and it kind of kicked off my horror reading journey! So I highly recommend it for the beginners.

Night Shift by Stephen King is a good recommendation. A few of the short stories became movies (Children of the Corn, Graveyard Shift, The Lawnmower Man, etc). I'm also in the camp of thinking RIley Sager's Home before Dark is a horror book because horror isn't just about a monster or ghost.. but also the ghosts of the past wrecking havoc on the present.

Good receommendations!

I think theres nuances to this because what about the people who read a bunch of mystery thrillers, I think they could probably more easily jump into horrors, as in, the troop. I think this list is awesome and personally I wanna try the genre lately SO BAD!

I LITERALLY finished rereading Penpal 2 days ago. I got 3 of my online friends to read it with me and they loved it! I'm also going to get them to read The Troop sometime next week! I absolutely loved it the first time I read it

Hey Gabby: I remember many of the reviews you posted as you read the horror novels featured here. Of course, I haven't been able to get to all of them but some, certainly. So, have been enjoying your channel for a few years and looking forward to a few more. Thx.

For newbie horror readers (I’m thinking young adult)…I’d say anything by Riley sager or Grady Hendrix. Depending on how spooky you’re looking for, maybe even start with RL Stine Fear Street series. If you like sci fi, try HP Lovecraft and Ray Bradbury. Romance…try Anne Rice or other vampire books. Historical fiction…try Jennifer macmahon (sp).
