DIY Copper Mug for Moscow Mule | Made from 3/4' Pipe!

All the cool kids are drinking Moscow Mules. But they’re supposed to be served in copper cups, which are expensive. Here’s how to make your own DIY copper cups with nothing more than 3/4 inch copper pipe. You can buy all of the materials for about $3 per cup from the hardware store, or find scrap metal and make them cheap or free.

I’ve never done any sort of copper or sheet metal fabrication so this is about what you can expect if you’re a beginner. Overall I’m happy with the results. The hardest part was learning to solder or “sweat” the parts together.

Our Moscow Mule recipe is 2oz vodka and 4oz ginger beer. These cups ended up about 7 ounces which are perfect.

helpful tip, heat the copper till it glows then quickly quench i in water till its cold. this will make it extremely malleable and easy to manipulate into your desired shape.

To anyone complaining or worried about the flux and solder, how do you think the pipes in your house were all attached?

the look your wife gave the camera while asking "you want me to drink from it " was priceless.
Good video thank you.

Just something to add- you could use copper sheet instead of splitting, flattening and soldering pipe into a sheet. You can also get copper solder instead of silver, so there's no visible solder.

What up! Those improv copper mugs are pretty dope.  Impressed by your skills, and inspired to get in a workshop again.  I'm going to research why copper mugs are a must to be served in.

Love the project but am a little concerned about solder usually containing lead. Have you looked into this at all?

Alright boss, your doing a good job soldering for not having any experience, ill give you a few tips, when soldering you should usually hold the torch on the metal instill its starts kind of smoking its way easier to do this with copper fittings and never put your solder in front of a blowtorch it will just clump up and fall of cheers!

Buy mapp gas and copper cutters.
Sand any parts being soldered.
Heat copper until a color change then apply solder. Then wipe.

Also, buy 1 1/2 or 2” copper if you don’t want an ugly seam in base from using the wrong size.

steel wool shines copper wonderfully, it dries your hands out though if you do it too long.

where were you working. It looked like a big work shop. Oh and yes it did look like your soldering skills as you persevered. Job well done.  solder is like magic when the metal is just hot enough & your flux starts to boil "poof" you touch the solder to the seam & it magically pulls it toward your torch & fills the seams. viola

Make sure solder has zero lead and any other toxic metals

another thing to remember is that copper tarnish that occurs naturally ie. ver de gris (the green stuff) is toxic to humans, that is the reason why all old copper foodware ie. plates/cups/pots etc were tinned.

So, the cup is too short, too wide, un-hammered(smooth), and potentially made with poisonous solder. ImPRESSive...

Why don't you get a wider pipe and just cut it and just attach a bottom part to it?
