Can We Treat Alzheimer's With Period Blood?

From diabetes to Alzheimer's, there's a lot that we hope to be able to treat using stem cell therapies. But the stem cells we use tend to be hard to come by. But it turns out there's a new source of stem cells that has researchers excited, because it's extremely common. In fact, it's something that many people throw away without thinking much of it, every month - Period blood.

This could be one of the most important periods in the history of medicine.

The worth of something that for ages has been deemed as dirty and even sinful enough to keep women from places of worship or even the family home, I’m glad is getting the real recognition it deserves. I hope it ends up being something that leads to the biggest discoveries in medicine.

This makes a lot of sense. If a uterus has the ability to make an entire human, it should have the ability to make the cells required for bones and organs, especially if umbilical cords and placentas carry them. I think the majority of women would be down to donate to the cause. Periods will feel more like a gift than a burden

The fact that it definitely has taken this long only because of how people have treated women and their periods for most of our modern medical existence is deeply saddeneing but this discovery finally is some of the most positive medical news ive seen in years

it drives me insane that it’s likely the stigma around menstruation that is the reason we haven’t already harvested the incredible potential of menstrual blood

Wait, why isn't this research being funded more? You literally have half the population who could help out by them doing something they do naturally and it takes out the morality of embryonic stem cell research for a lot of people. There has to be something missing from this video on why this isn't being expanded upon more.

This actually has made me tear up! Women around the world have been made to feel shame for having a period and look! We can save lives with our periods! This research needs to be shared more. End period shame.

This is HUGE! imagine instead of throwing menstrual blood away, we could donate it at hospitals, as you would a blood donation. This should be getting so much more attention.

It may sound a bit weird on my part, but I'd donate if there were a facility near me that needed donations. I had no idea that a period could be this useful, it's actually amazing. It's kinda nice to know that something that's just a normal vaguely annoying (and often painful) part of life for lots of us can be so helpful for medical research

I’ve played enough Bloodborne not to question this.

As someone from India, whose grandma passed with Alzhimers and about to take down my 'monthly redecorating', I had to check out the facility in India.
I was so surprised to read that this technology was first launched in 2007 and we are only now discussing it in 2023.
Why in the world was my 'monthly decoration' allowed to be disdained as icky for 16 years?
This one discovery has the potential to make so much social change and they just sat on it for 16 years

Started a heavy and painful period today on a day when it was really inconvenient for work... This made me feel a little better. Thanks ❤

ive witnessed the stages of dementia. A cure would not only help the ill, but also the families that suffer from the experience

Really hope this goes somewhere. My grandpa had Alzheimer’s and he’s really not doing well- I don’t think he’ll last to see this treatment but it gives me hope that it could save others.

Clicked on this since I started menstruating today and have been going THROUGH it, and am now feeling a bit better. Science is amazing.

I'm so happy, I could cry. Having my period has always been the dreaded time of the month but now it's something that I can actually be so grateful for. Us women are amazing 😭💫
