this was truly one of the most masterful scenes in mainstream cinematic history. it never fails to bring tears to my eyes. there is so much fundamental humanity in chieko's silent, isolated world. the entire movie is worth watching just for the context that sets the stage for this scene.

This scene made me fall in love with filmmaking. I’m a film student now!

Best scene in the movie hands down, It really puts you in her shoes. I forgot she was deaf until she walked into the club, and I bet that's how she felt. Forgot all of her problems for a few minutes. Until she didn't understand what was going on anymore.

Gosh, I just wanted to hug her in this scene. Being too high to create boundaries when you like someone who gets together with your friend. I've been there for sure.

I can’t even describe how incredible this sequence is. It makes me just ache with nostalgia and longing for experiences that I’ve had and never had. I’m not that big a fan of the rest of the film, but this sequence alone is firmly among my favorite of all-time and I think it’ll stay that way.

I watched Babel in 2007, and this scene is still stuck in my head. Masterpiece!

Part of me wishes the entire movie was just about Chieko, I liked the setting and conflict a lot more than any of the other ones. Plus the shot of her on the swing is just one of the best shots in film history

The way the visuals symbolize her confusion and then isolation is pretty amazing

This was one of the best movies I saw by myself at the theater. I went to a matinee alone and smoked a bowl in my car in the parking lot. This scene was captivating with the ambient music and visuals of the city. Her story was honestly the only part I remembered from the movie for the longest time.

This scene speaks volumes without the use of words.

The story of Chieko, a deaf and mute Japanese girl, is an interesting one. Few people have actually had to associate with people who are deaf and mute on a personal level. In the story we can understand that Chieko’s disability emotionally hurts her. She feels as if she is seen as a monster because she cannot speak nor hear people. In this situation Chieko has been placed in a group different from that of the majority, and because of that she is seen as being different. She isn’t given the same type of attention that those in the majority are able to get. For the most part it is understandable that she isn’t noticed as much as others. If you look at her experiences explained through the story you can infer that she is portrayed as being invisible. One prominent scene in Babel happens after Chieko takes an unknown drug and leaves the rave that she was at. You can see her walking down the streets of a highly populated metropolitan area in Japan. The scene is from her point of view, all around her is silent and it appears that she is aimlessly walking the streets of Japan. The interesting thing about this scene is that there is absolutely no sound, especially in this highly populated area. This scene portrays the idea that she is invisible, she doesn’t exist to everyone else just because of how eerie the silence was.

If it wasn't for Jennifer Hudson's acting and singing in "Dreamgirls" that year, Rinko Kikuchi would have won the Best Actress Oscar, and would have been the only Japanese female to win a major Academy Award...such a great portrayal of a deaf woman with many sides to her life, some happy some very sad and regretful, but full of hope regardless of her handicap.

This was so beautifully shot. One of my favorite scenes in the movie. First and second time I watched this movie I cried. I was emotional for weeks. Best piece of work and art done by Inaritu!
