Is Green Methanol Greenwashing? [UPTIME WIND ENERGY PODCAST]

"Scaling wind energy ...and automating operations" are important, and those are two things Future Positive Capital wants to see happen after its $9M investment in Aerones. There's more to the explanation worth discussing, so Allen, Rosemary and Joel dive in. They also take a deep dive into the Wind-to-Methanol fray, where there's a lot of discord, and a lot of (grant and investment) money at stake. A flammable liquid that has traditionally been used to make other chemicals like formaldehyde and acetic acid, Methanol is becoming the green darling of the maritime industry. But is it a carbon-neutral fuel? The Uptime crew looks at the issue from several angles, does the math, and tries to work it out. Also, GE has three new names (and one unhappy union) - so what changes might we see?

From food waste you can go directly to methane by "fermentation" so that part could be very green and produce the end product will be good for field improvement on farms. The rest as not so easy, but I would be better then having it end up in a landfill. If it can be done in a way that make any economical sense I am not so sure of.
What I am sure about is that wind farms need a place to dump electricity that is not directly to the net. When the market go negative for hours every time there is a good wind day and some sun at the same time there is a problem and it is not getting better. In the north of Norway they are limited by transmission lines and there are more production now then needed. The result is that for months now the cost of 1 MW/h has been between 2-5 US dollar.

One point that can help is that the boil off cools the gas very efficiently. If your energy need are equal to or higher then the boil off then you need no cooling. The is how they do it on large gas tankers. The boil off is driving the ship. Also a 100 bar of pressure at 3000 feet will have some effect. :-)
