Stop MotionTutorial: Whiteboard Animation

Whiteboard-style animation can be done on an app these days, but there are some effects you might want to get with it that still call for a camera, a real whiteboard, and a few actual pens. That's what I get into in this tutorial. Whether it's just to get that hand-made look to the animation or to combine it with pixilation or stop motion, here is a look at how to create real-world whiteboard animation.

Software: Dragonframe and Stop Motion Studio. iStopmotion (Mac and mobile) is a good frame-capturing app for the price. I understand iKITmovie is a good free option for Windows. If you have a favorite stop motion app, please tell us about it in the comments. Edited using Adobe Premiere.

Camera: I'm using a DSLR. But if you're not there yet, a good option is a camcorder that can run a live video signal to your computer. But these days a mobile device with a camera running a stop motion app is all you need. The principles discussed in this video will also apply to animation recorded with a mobile device.

If you invert the colours, then do a 180* hue shift you get your original colours back!

Inverting the colors on the image looks really fantastic (especially for the spaceship and lasers)! Also, starting with the full image and using it as a reference and/or starting with the end image and erasing then reversing the footage are both very clever Michael. Thank you. This was great! : )

I love this! I have seen the app versions, and they are catchy. I agree though, the hand-made look adds to it, and inverting the colors makes it even better! 👏 I also love that you used a pole from a cat scratcher...too funny.

Can you show us how this can be used for character animation? It is hard to imagine this for character animation. Also you make the greatest tutorials, so any excuse to see your work.
