Plunge Cuts with a Standard Straight Bit - Quick Tip

preview_player

Because there is no cutting surface on the tip of a standard straight bit, they cannot be plunged into the work to make a cut. Here's a quick work around you can use if you're ever in a situation where you need to make a plunge cut but don't have a plunge bit.

Hello. I am totally new to routers so I've been watching a lot on youtube of it, wanting to soak in everything that I can. I've never seen this mentioned before. I tried what you said and found it totally true! Plunge routing is mainly what I wanted to do and now, thanks to you, I know what to look for when next I'd go buy a bit. Thank you for pointing this out.

💥THANK YOU💥 for this! Was trying to figure out how to cut a channel using an old fixed base router. You confirmed my thoughts of having to use a drill...thx 👍

That's a great tip, Matt! I have never thought of that but I definitely see how it's better than tilting the router. Thanks for sharing.

This tip is very timely for me, Matt. I'm building a bookcase which will require stopped dados and was going to use the tilt the router method with my 2 flute bits. Your method is much better. Thanks!

I've had good results zig zagging it too. Like this quick videos as this was my first day back to work after many months of leave and won't have time to keep up with all my subscriptions now. But I'm going to try.
