Unisex bathrooms proposed for schools

Basic Education is proposing unisex bathrooms in public schools. It also wants to do away with pronouns to indicate genders, like 'boys and girls' or 'him and her'. The public will get to comment on the proposals from next year but there's already been some backlash from political parties and civil society. Courtesy #DStv403

I think unisex toilets in a country that is ravaged by sexual violence is a no for me. Also, what about those kids who want to be referred to as he or she. I do not think it is wise to get rid of the terms "she" or "he". Kids must be given the choice to be referred to the way they like. Not a blanket ban of such terms.

Some schools don’t even have toilets! Some schools don’t even have enough seats to accommodate all the learners how are they focusing on this??

I am a school child and I can tell you without a doubt that this is not even on the list of concerns that learners have. We have real problems that we have to deal with, we have children who go to school on an empty stomach and then they also have to worry about what they are going to eat after school. We have children who can't even afford school uniforms. With that being said, I know that the DBE is combating the hunger problem, but now I think that it is time they turn their attention to having government funded uniform shops. These would help those in need to feel like they are equal in the sight of their peers. And so instead of focusing on trivial matters such as unisex bathrooms how about they come up with real solutions to real problems that are affecting learners today.

As a girl who was bullied, forcefully kissed throughout primary, I don't even wanna think what could've happened had we shared bathrooms with those boys.
