Gavin Luke is an American composer who makes music inspired by nostalgia, nature, and the human condition. His diverse and prolific body of work spans an astonishing range of styles and traditions—from neoclassical to ambient, pop to jazz, EDM to film scoring. His music has tallied 470 million Spotify streams and 15 billion plays via sync in YouTube videos.

Raised in Minneapolis, Gavin was born with what he describes as “an obsession with music.” At age 7, he enrolled in classical piano lessons, following in the footsteps of his parents and his grandmother. In his teens, he absorbed and experimented with the works of Brahms, Mozart, and George Winston. After studying music synthesis and scoring at the Berklee College of Music, he earned a degree in psychology and moved to LA to continue honing his craft as a composer for film.

The naturalism embedded in Gavin’s approach is inherited from the new age composers who influenced him, and who themselves drew inspiration from the natural world. It is also rooted in childhood memories of fishing and hiking in the lakes and woods his family frequented in Minnesota. In Gavin’s compositional process, sounds, objects, and moments—a thunderstorm, for example—often evoke nostalgic associations from his youth. These recollections intermingle with the sound of the keys as he plays on his grandmother’s fully restored 1925 Steinway grand piano, kindling a fresh musical idea.

So beautiful! But...maybe she left because he smokes cigarettes..😉. What it makes me envision is that he is a romantic person, and he did love her but he is unable to commit. He enjoys the thrill of the chase and courtship but always falls away from a relationship. Like most men who are womanizers, he does feel regret for losing someone he cared for, but his inability to truly love and commit destroyed the relationship. She sees that he is not going to commit and probably sees other women so she gives up and moves on. So there he sits with a book of memories that reminds him of how he felt about her and he's still alone. Still seeking that perfect woman who will make him want to stay and not chase other women, but she will never come because he is the broken one. It makes him sad, but he cannot change. I've seen this type of thing in so many men, and it is a sad thing. Chasing rainbows, and often times, when they're too old to chase women anymore, they compromise and settle for much less than they could have had, IF they only would have held on to that one special relationship that came and went, that they let slip through their fingers.

I'm not sure this helped me relax. But it was certainly beautiful... albeit in a very bittersweet way. I also don't understand the story, entirely. His journal was of sorrowful feelings. But what did she write in hers (or did she write in his) that she didn't want him to see? Was it a goodbye to him, meant for later in the day, and he wanted to see it early, but did not truly understand it until the moment she left him on the beach? What motivated her to not see him, in the same way that he saw her? Tremendously well directed and produced, whatever the case, story-wise. Really enjoyed the effort, the music, the visuals, and the connectivity between it all.
