I’m Cape Verdian and African and I love my African brothers and sisters. Don't judge us by the opinions of some people. That is not the opinion of the entire population.

This must be one of the best videos on Cape Verde. As you rightly said, you kept it "real, a100%". Good job, thank you for your effort.

When I hear the word Cape Verde, I think of a Kapsalon. That delicious snack, invented by a Cape Verdean in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. And I’m grateful for his genius.

I've been living in Cape Verde 6 years. I learned to speak Creole and it changed everything. As a white man speaking the language it opened many doors. Best and cheapest seafood is found at the fish market. 1kg of tuna €6.

My jamaican friends went there a few years ago, they loved it but they did notice the bias and the discrimination.

Cape Verde is such an interesting and unusual place. On the island of Boa Vista, you can see one of the most unique forms of integration among Africans. I honestly think it’s the strongest example of pan-African integration in all of West Africa—I’ve never seen anything like it.

What’s strange, though, is the divide. The wealthier areas of the city are mostly controlled by the Italians, who dominate the economy on the islands. It’s like what they’ve done in places from South Africa to Nairobi, using exploitation to stay in control.

On the other hand, the African side is fascinating. You see people from all over West Africa living side by side with the local Cape Verdeans. But despite this mix, there’s still a noticeable tension. They rarely allow mixed marriages, and you can sense a deep-seated dislike or disdain toward other Africans from the locals.

That’s why I think this is one of the strangest examples of integration I’ve come across.

I am positive that the Portuguese started this division among Africans in Cape Verde. Just like the Caucasians here in the US created division, and hatred among our shades of black. They taught us to hate our blackness. I must admit with cape Verde being In the west African region of the continent where the majority is black this approach seemed to have backfired. It is still has the stench of racism. The worst kind of racism in my opinion is self racism. The dislike and hatred of oneself. For example black on black crime in the US. I almost forgot to mention the Rwandan genocide.

For some reason, I had high expectations that learning more about Cape Verde would convince me to visit. Unfortunately, I found it to be less engaging than I had hoped. The discussions seemed divisive, and I got the impression that some individuals were distancing themselves from their true identity. While every country has its complexities, it left me feeling disconnected from the culture. The terrain seems a bit dry too.

To Willie, the presenter, i liked the honesty with your full disclosure. I was however a bit disappointed by how you handled the discussion with the young woman. It seemed like an opportunity to explore deeper perspectives was missed, and I also felt like there was a subtle attempt to distance yourself from your African heritage in favor of an American identity. I was hoping for a more balanced conversation that embraced both aspects of your roots.

Willie, I am a cultural anthropologist and your video is SUPERB! Great perspective from an "outsiders" perspective!
