PC VR's BIGGEST Innovation | Boost Framerates Immensely!

Thanks to AMD's open source FidelityFX, a passtionate member of the VR community has created a mod that allows you to activate the functionality for a LARGE library of Steam VR games to get better framerates/resolutions.

In this video I talk about why this is a huge deal, and what it says for the future of PC VR.

FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR for short) is an upscaling technique developed by AMD, but it works on pretty much any graphics card, including NVIDIA cards. The idea is that the game internally renders to a lower resolution, thus saving GPU time and reaching higher FPS, as long as it is not bottlenecked by the CPU. The resulting lower resolution render is then upscaled to the target resolution by FSR, with the aim of restoring some of the lost detail due to the lower resolution rendering. It does so in two steps - the first being the actual upscaling to the target resolution, where particular attention is paid to edges in the lower resolution picture. The second step is a sharpening step to counter some of the blur introduced by the upscaling.

Yes this mod works on NVIDIA GPUs too.

Ironically I see a lot of Quest players online asking how to move to PCVR and if they buy a PC with certain specs would it be enough? It's like the complète opposite of what people said. The Quest 2 is actually a gateway drug to PCVR lol

I have a 1050ti, and now I can use the VRChat mirror with 2fps!

You had the option of clickbaiting the title "Is vr dead?!" or "VR is dead*shocked face*" and you didn't. You have my respect for that.

I tried this with a township tale, frame rate much more stable it seems like and I can’t see a difference in visual clarity. Especially for demanding games, this is amazing.

Out of all the shirts I have ever seen in my life, that is definitely a shirt.

Ryzen 5 2600, RTX 2060. Don't have any hard numbers atm but I can definitely say this is helping with performance. FSR is the future of VR.

Imo the marketing of FSR and DLSS is reverse of what it should be. It is not really a performance improvement per se, because I could already decrease the resolution before. Rather, for little runtime cost, I can increase the image quality by using a high quality upscaling technique, without increasing the render resolution beyond what my GPU can handle.

I love how cozy your channel feels.
Your dark messy room filled with knick knacks and cool hi-tech stuff in the background...
I'm getting oldschool YouTube vibes every time i watch your videos, maybe even a little nostalia. I love that.
It's so fun to look back at your older videos to see things from the future how they were when they were new.

I don't really know how to say this, but i feel like you're someone quite rare or precious i guess, heh.

Just installed this on VRC. BOOM, 144fps in most places.. Even though I run a very beefy system (3090, R9 5900x), I still have trouble sometimes just due to the nature of VRC's user created content. I can say, this definitely boosted my average FPS.

Been looking to upgrade my 1060 for years now, but with everything at 2-3x MSRP I've had no luck. This will do very nicely.

RTX 3090 and i9 10900k with Valve Index. I tested Blade and Sorcery and was shocked how I could get bigger mobs with a stable framerate. Felt fuckin' awesome!

I bought a Quest 2 in April, then another one in July, and finally just got my gaming laptop this week.🙌🏻

With limited testing Beatsaber has literally no hiccups now on modded maps, and No Mans Sky went from unplayable to very enjoyable and smooth. Overall a major difference (Specs: CPU I7-6700 GPU 1660 TI)

I have a 2600X and a 2060 Super (oc'ed to its max) and installed the FSR mod on Dirt Rallye 2.0 (high to highest settings)... without it I had large dips to 40 fps, cap at 80... was okay but noticeable and irritating at some point. With the mod, average maybe 75, better experience almost no dips and I didnt even change the settings yet... so fantastic! (Oculus Rift 2 btw)

Thank you for the pointer. Game changer in Fallout4 VR. You have to increase the font size b/c this mod does the upscaling after the UI elements are drawn, screwing up text. Wish, all developers would add it into their pipelines.

Would you mind showing a video demoing the installation for modifying OpenDLL? Some of this seems to be way over my head so I just am not quite sure whats dangerous to mess up.

Finally had a chance to try this. Doom VR and Spiderman far from home would always crash on my 1050 Ti. I tried MSI afterburner and it would still crash after a few minutes. Now on standard clock while using AMD FSR mod I was finally able to play them both comfortably.

I used this with Assetto Corsa and found to get around 10 to 15, maybe 20fps at times, fps more in that game. I have a Ryzen 7 3800x and RTX 2070 Super with 32 gigs ram. I used stock settings for the mod, didn't change anything in the config. The clarity of the game was kind of noticeable but barely, i used a HTC Vive for my test. I think if they keep making this better i agree it could def run on the steam deck, no doubt. I'm excited for this all to happen. Hopefully you can make more videos on this subject as new updates come out on it!
