With the help of Bowen, Solomon trades the diamond to Simmons for a large sum of money and the reunification of his family, making the exchange as Solomon's wife and children deplane from a Lear Jet at a London airport. Bowen, who secretly photographs the deal, later publishes a magazine piece exposing the trade in "conflict" or "blood" diamonds. The film ends with Solomon smiling at the photograph Maddy took of Archer earlier, now published in her magazine along with the complete story of their journey, before addressing a conference on blood diamonds in Kimberley, South Africa, describing his experiences. This refers to an actual meeting that took place in Kimberley in 2000 and led to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, which seeks to certify the origin of diamonds in order to curb the trade in conflict diamonds.

This movie should be more popular than it is today.

Notice how, as he walks away from the book, he doesn’t close it. Instead, he lays it gently on the seat, still open on Danny’s page, almost as if to say “rest now, old friend”. Poignant.

My heart breaks when he looks at the diamond necklace, thinking how many lives lost on that just one necklace.

As a Sierra Leonian who survived the war, I have lived this story, n there are many things being exploited in this world, but I have always said I will never wear a diamond in my life. The pink diamond is in the shape of Sierra Leone I don’t know why that gets me every time. No place like Lion Mountain 🤲🏾

In my country Sierra Leone were this movie is based we normally only watch this movie and listen to this song every year on January 6th watching this movie or listening to this music we tend to cry or feel so much pain watching it. As a country war has broken us apart and to this day we’re trying hard to recover. Side note 80% of our people keep this movie in our houses to show our feature kids every year on January 6th.

Maddie’s face in the last second? Mixed emotions. She looked proud of herself as a journalist and Solomon and of what they have achieved but sad at the same time that Archer didn’t survive to witness these moments.

I was like 12 when i first saw this movie at my grandmas house. I didn’t understand the whole story back then but now as an adult its a masterpiece imo. Absolutely love it. Definitely underrated also.

At 1:56, watch how Maddie is snapping pictures, then when the boy arrives at his father and is drawn in by him, she retracts her camera. I can only imagine this is because she's aware that that part of the story is outside of description. The boy's struggles as a child soldier is a massive can of worms that she at least knows enough to respect and keep out of the story for the sake of their own healing.

"There are still 200, 000 child soldiers in Africa."
A reality we can be aware of, yet there is nothing we can do about.
