The one thing that should always be said in response to that is, no. Anything captive bred should not be released into the wild. You are doing more harm than good. (Unless you are an actual trained professional.)

IMPORTANT: Never set a marine pet free by flushing it down the toilet or a drain! It can be sent somewhere it doesn’t belong and can ruin the ecosystem, instead, give it to a pet store, or another place that will take your pet for you, same goes for fish tank plants, don’t flush them! They can become invasive this way.

People forget the fact that despite looking cute, they are deadly Predators.

My friend said: if they were born is a tank, they should stay in a tank. If they are born in the wild, the should stay in the wild
Edit: mom I'm famous I think

Axolotls are extremely sensitive species. They'd just die if you "freed" them. They literally live under specific conditions at the bottom of ONE LAKE ON THE ENTIRE PLANET. The pet variety are actually preserving the species in captivity.

That’s the exact same thing that happens with goldfish! People will flush them or even just set them free, and they can potentially destroy a whole ecosystem.

Who wants to release pets into the wild? DID WE LEARN NOTHING FROM THE EVERGLADES??

No worries! Your very nice to your axolotls and axolotls born in captivity aren’t used to the environment outside their tank.

Also, the reason axolotls are endangered isn't due to the pet trade, its because their habitat is being threatened due to pollution, overfishing as axolotls are a delicacy in Mexico, habitat loss from development projects in the area, and invasive species being introduced in their habitat. They are native only to lake Xochimilco, everything I mentioned above is happening to that lake. Breeding programs aren't working because there's almost no habitat left to repopulate. The pet trade is the only thing keeping them from fully going extinct, not just in the wild.

Another thing to add is that most current axolotls have a little bit of tiger salamander in them which could very much effect the wild population.

That would be like responding to a dwindling wolf population by setting free a "herd" of pugs

Y’all realize that if you flush it, it’s mostly likely just being sent to a water treatment plant and will not be freed

Thankyou sooo much for this vid. I really want an axolotl and I’m trying to convince my mum to let me get one but she always says “there endangered species and it would harm them”. I’m gonna show her this and hope she finally lets me get one.

I love how some ppl say you shouldn't own certain pet and they should be free only for them to not realize you can't take a animal that has been raised in captivity into the wild otherwise you just are asking them to die, best thing I had to explain to my dad for him to leave me alone with my amazing snake :)

Never flush a fish down the toilet cuz it will end up to a septic tank

Love how people who know nothing about animals are usually the ones saying what is and what is bad for them
