Biodiversity net gain – Cohabiting with the natural habitat

Urban sprawl often leads to encroachment of natural habitats, negatively impacting biodiversity. Aside from harm caused to animal and plant life, nature provides services and resources that are valuable to humans but at risk of being lost or diminished through unchecked expansion. These include climate change mitigation, flood regulation and the provision of raw materials & ingredients. How can countries balance development with safeguarding the natural habit? In England, for example, developers will soon be required to show a 10% biodiversity net gain (BNG). How effective will this be and how does BNG compare with other countries efforts to preserve their biodiversity?
