Fun Fact: This form of shutdown still exists on modern Windows. This is a non-ACPI Shutdown, which basically means that if your PC's On/Off Switch doesn't communicate with your Motherboard (and directly opens or closes power flow), the OS can instead enter a state where it is safe to shutdown without risking damage.
