Shortly after, he would invent the world’s most convenient cup of coffee, and with the help of George Clooney, he would globalize the concept of the coffee pod. I worked for Nestle for 11 years.
They definitely don't put much effort into sustainability or environmental impact.
Production always took precedents.

I use a plunger pot . It’s ridiculously easy to use and being double-walled, stainless steel the coffee stays hot for at least an hour. You can use any type of coffee and make any amount up to and including 6 cups. Nothing left except the grounds which I use in my compost. You can also buy glass at different stores.

Fine presentation. Funny how it's always those people and commercial entities and groups who promise the loudest that end up being the worst.

I doubt whether people care about the environment. I see single use coffee cups on tv at work throw away. Most people don't care

If George backs it, there has to be a problem.

It would help if you looked at Nestle's history not only with chocolate and worker exploration but also with modern slavery. But the worst in my opinion is the baby powder formula mild scandal in Mexico

I use reusable/resealable pods, filled with my favourite coffee, tamped down, the only thing the Nespresso machine does is heat the water through my pods & froth the milk. I have some plastic pods that are made to fit Nespresso machines, I fill those pods with a different favourite coffee, tamp down, put a piece of aluminium foil on top & seal around the individual pod edges, these are perforated @ the bottom, no aluminium foil is punched to get coffee out & store in the refrigerator.

I have had a Citiz(original capsule) for nigh on 15 yrs. It doesn’t get a lot of use overall but periodically it does. I now use 3rd party capsules exclusively, Nespresso’s are a ripoff despite their promotion. I appreciate that it isn’t a true espresso - for starters it uses very little coffee per shot but it is passable and convenient. I did try the Vertuo system but it wasn’t worth the price for capsules and I scrapped it. My go-to coffee as a beverage is fresh ground direct into a re-usable Keurig capsule. I also have an Aeropress and a V60, both of which can make something more than a “vin-ordinaire” coffee drink.

Believe the hype and get what you paid for..
For over 10 yrs I've roasted purchased green beans using a heat gun mounted to a bread machine. With a decent grinder and expresso machine you will never buy store sold coffee again.
Over the time I've roasted way over 200 kg of many various type of single origin green beans, using the same DIY adjustable heatgun and a converted for purpose cheap 2nd hand breadmaker appliance.

The concept is very similar to that of the ink jet printer system where they entice you to buy the machine for practically nothing but real ongoing cost is with the ink or pods. The machines themselves are built on the cheap and not designed to last so aside from the ink cartridge or pod waste problem, there is also a secondary waste problem with people regularly tossing out the machines. At the end of the day, forgetting out the environmental waste problem for a moment, the coffee pod system seems to be a false economy with people getting into it because it's much cheaper and easier than investing in a traditional coffee machine / grinder system but when you add up the ongoing cost over a year or so, it's not as cheap and usually costs more than a traditional set up. Personally I think pod coffee is generally a better experience than instant or percolated coffee however it does not compare to fresh coffee beans ground on demand and brewed with a real espresso machine. I'd much prefer to waste 2 or 3 minutes making a real coffee over a 30 second pod coffee that is nowhere near as good.

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying a coffee but seldom do we consider where it came from.
I personally think the Aeropress is probably the best affordable machine, I say that because it’s relatively inexpensive and you have control over what you use.
The coffee pods in themselves seem harmless enough but they are not always recycled so much, if they become contaminated it’s easier to send them for landfill as opposed or rinsing or cleaning them. With Aeropress you can use a paper filter or buy a stainless filter for a bit extra and re use it again. I have a small manual grinder for my beans which I buy locally and where possible I try to buy Fairtrade stuff that supports the growers and their community.Where possible you would be better off to have as simple a process and that gives you control over things. The Nespresso pod is no longer the sole domain of Nestle and other companies make compatible ones with various degrees of popularity, alas whilst it’s commendable it doesn’t remove the issue of the spent capsules. That’s why I chose to move away from capsules to Aeropress, there’s little waste with real coffee beans and an Aeropress machine. You can buy ground coffee if you wish but a coffee grinder is not necessarily expensive you can buy a manual one for around $20-30 or the equivalent. A grinder will last ages and requires very little maintenance. The Nespresso machines do leak and breakdown too, that then causes another problem of recycling the components or sending it landfill. A bit like printer cartridges the coffee pod has created a problem that won’t easily go away. Whilst it’s not perfect the Aeropress offers a sensible way to enjoy real coffee that you can buy and know how much of an impact you are making on the planet and its resources too. There are other systems with a pour over method but I think the Aeropress is a clever blend of ease and convenience at a sensible level.

Some might say that this is a very expensive way of drinking sub-standard coffee. I couldn't possibly comment!

Our local municipality accepts Nespresso pods in our recycling bins, prior to that, we always sent the used pods back, free of charge, in bags provided by Nestle. It’s not Nestle that failed, it’s people who couldn’t be bothered to collect and send back the used pods free of charge: maybe some of you whining in the comment section.

Barista coffee is so easy now with products like the Breville Tounch Impress. There is really no need for Pod machines in most houses. They are handy in hotels.
