It looks like this is covered in US Patent - US 2010/0189744A1. Everything lines up pretty close to what Charlie is saying. I think they are using the word 'turbine' but from the wording in the patent, it is electrically driven. Probably PWM.

In any rate, Great Job! I appreciate you going over this in detail.

If there's a fan propelled by a motor, you usually call it a pump or a compressor, not a turbine. A turbine is a device to extract (& not inject) energy from a fluid stream. But for some reason the ventilator people use the word turbine to describe compressors. Unless it's an actual turbine run off a compressed air line, of course.

Remember kids, the legal mambojambo is really hard and if you are working with open source ventilator project, watching or looking or refering to MEdronics designs (documents) may contaminate your project and Medtronic can sue you. :( The license is only for duration of this pandemic.
