For most people, if you need the most performance you should just go for a 14", but some people want a thin and light machine and need a bit more consistent performance instead of hitting 108F after 28 seconds when your doing a heavy CPU load like exporting photos.

It is a relief to realize that the real world use case for this M2 air is actually solid and these thermal issues and memory concerns are unlikely to affect the 99.9% of users such as myself.

With the thermal mod you should also re-measure the skin temperature to make sure it doesn't exceed mandatory limits. (I think 45c/113f is what it used to be). Doubt the apple silicon stuff ever hits that though.

What thickness of the thermal pads are you suggesting? There's 1.5mm, 1.0mm, 2.0mm, 0.5mm, 2.5mm and 3.0mm.

As some other have said, I would be slightly concerned about heat going into the other parts. How's the M1 MBA doing after the pads? Otherwise, nice to see such a simple solution for the heat!

Maybe using one of those thermal bases for laptops, that feature a fan, would help with sustained loads for these thermal pad setup? That would be really cool to see!

Since you did 2 mods on this M2 (Thermal Paste and Thermal Pads). I would like to see how much of a difference the Thermal pads make with the stock thermal paste. I don't think many would want to mess with their macbook air too much just to change the thermal paste, however the thermal pads seems like a very simple fix that many would be willing to do.

Thermal pads are doing a really good job keeping the M2 chip cool. But the question is when you put it in your lap is it much hotter because we spread more heat to the case? Is it uncomfortable feeling in the lap if you do it for a longer period of time?

Thanks for the data. However I think there should be more emphasis on the non-performance-related QOL effects of the mod. Using the chassis as an extended heatsink surely helps thermals but may significantly impact the subjective experience for those who rest the laptops on their bodies, even if the end result is under the legal temp limit. After all, hotspot locations and surface temperature can greatly affect user experience.
