The Top 10 Cutest Baby Animals

Number 10: Polar Bears

Polar bears are most often born in pairs. They are born with white down fur and weigh about 2 pounds. They stay with their mother in the den for a few months before they emerge as a family for the first time in the spring. Polar bears enjoy a carnivorous diet rich in seal meat and birds eggs.

Number 9: Koala

The koala is a marsupial and goes into its mother’s front pouch after 30 weeks gestation. It will stay in the pouch until it’s ready to venture out on its own. The koala baby is called a joey and has smooth fur with an extra-large head.

Number 8: Squirrels

A baby squirrel is usually born in a nest and is initially the size of a gerbil. They are not born with fur but around 4-6 weeks they will have a soft coat with a long fuzzy tail. After 6 weeks they will start venturing from the nest.

Number 7: Platypus

Unlike most mammals, platypi are born from eggs. The mother burrows into a riverbed and lays her eggs, then sits on them for 2 weeks before they hatch. The babies will stay with their mother nestled in the riverbed for 4-5 mos. after which they swim and feed on their own. They’re short furry animals with oversized web feet and a long, flat bill.

Number 6: Elephants

Baby elephants weigh an average of 250 pounds and are 3 feet tall. They drink their mother’s milk only until they are 4mos old and then eat plants but continue drinking milk until they are almost 10 years old. A baby elephant is born with either curly red or black hair on their forehead that they lose shortly after birth.

Number 5: Piglets

A newborn piglet can recognize its mother’s voice and comes when called. They prefer to sleep close to one another and are extremely social animals. A piglet weighs approximately 2.5 pounds and has a stocky little body with a flat snout. A mother pig gives birth to 10-12 piglets at a time.

Number 4: Kangaroo

Baby kangaroos are called joeys and are best known for living in their mother’s front pouches before emerging into the world. The joey can stay in its mother’s pouch anywhere from 120 to 450 days. They are the only animal to hop as their primary way of moving around.

Number 3: Giraffe

Baby giraffes are called calves. When a calf is born it already stands at a staggering 6ft. Its legs are wobbly as it stands immediately after birth and within an hour it will be running around its mother’s legs. Giraffes loves to eat and can consume over 200 pounds of leaves per week.

Number 2: Otters

With their long, lean bodies and soft webbed paws the baby otter is called a pup. Pups live with their family for 1 yr before they venture out on their own. They have a lifespan of 16-20 yrs and eat a diet of fish with the occasional frog.

There are 17 species of hedgehogs. The African pygmy hedgehog and the long-eared hedgehog are the 2 most often found as pets. The average lifespan is about 4-7 years and their diet consists of melon and insects. Hedgehogs are well-known for having quills and their ability to roll up into a ball. Its a defensive trait that protects it from predators such as badgers. With its soft pink belly and scrunched little face the hedgehog is arguably the cutest baby animal on earth.
