Let’s chat about the books I bought in January.
#bookhaul

I'm still an idiot because I said Parsipur's novel (book #8 below) was translated 'from the Persian' but I meant Farsi. Duh! One day I will get it right...

Also: Body Kintsugi (book #5 below) is not a memoir but autofiction.

Unwell women sounds like one I may want to read. An Iran project! Cool. I hope to find some great reads through your project

Patricia Highsmith has peaked my interest for awhile, I just got The Talented Mr. Ripley and can't wait to dive into her work!
Love your videos, stellar recommendations and you're hilarious <3

Every time I watch one of your videos, my reading list is getting longer! 'The Age of Goodbyes, ' 'Women Unwell, ' and 'The Cosmopolitans' sound particularly interesting. :)

I’m at about the same place in Babel as you and Heidi. I’m loving it, despite not really being drawn to fantasy. My daughter had recommended the Poppy War Trilogy to me, which I’ve yet to get to.

Great haul Britta- several here I’m interested in and I’m reading A Bigger Picture for book naturalists too. I loved The Book of Mother but I know not everyone did- I’ll be interested to see what you think!

The cosmopolitans was a big deal in NYC back when it came out. I was underwhelmed so I am curious to see your thoughts!

"Tomato/tomaato, potato/potaato, let's call the whole thing off, " except Babel/Baabel sounds interesting, on the list it goes.

Hi Britta,
I love your channel. I’m following it for quite some time, and my - already long - TBR has grown even more as a result.
Today I’m writing to ask you to clarify something that is bugging me. When you talk about your latest reading projects you mention books from the global south. What do you mean by that? It’s not the southern hemisphere because you talk about Iranian and Caribbean writers. Please help me out of my ignorance.
Thank you, Hilde ( German from Krefeld, married to a Dutchman, so we have these two countries in common)

Babel - it's Britsh vs US pronunciation - we also refer to the Biblical tower with the short 'a' (pronounced the same as Babble) so that's why you're hearing Americans pronouce the book title that way. I didn't even realize the Brits pronounced it the other way till this book came out!
I'm curious how you're defining the Global 'South' - I guess I'd put it somewhere around and south of the Tropic of Cancer, which Iran is well north of - Iran is around the same latitude as North Carolina and central/northern California (around San Francisco)! I think of it as 'East' but not 'South'... I know it's a different perspective from Europe, which is so far north, but that line would put over half the US in the Global South, which hurts my head! 😂

I thought Unwell Women was great but hard going, content wise at times. Babel was one of my favourites last year - R F Kaung has said that either pronuciation is fine, she said she hadn't realised there was two ways to say it, I think.

I LOVED Babel, it spoke to my anti colonialism soul and I am looking forward to hear your thoughts on the book. Rebecca Kuang is definitely a writer to follow (she has another book coming out later this year). You have piqued my interest in Patricia Highsmith. I do enjoy your videos but you increase my TBR every time.
