I've visited cougars in a rescue facility. They do indeed purr--and those that have had bonded human relationships are quite affectionate. Not that their mood can't change in a split second to "apex predator" and suddenly see you through this lens--but those who know them can usually bring them back.

I was petting one of my cats today. She's super friendly. She likes a good rubbing-heads-together too, so we did that, but then, overstimulated I guess, she took a nip at my cheek, drawing a drop of blood. These cougars seem friendly and housecat-like, but I can imagine that playing out... there goes a hunk of my cheek!
