Thank you very much for this information.... problem though... I use MS expression web 4 as it is free... but it does not appear to recognise the var() for some reason. It does, however, recognise the :root{} part... Any idea why and how to rectify the problem?

variable '--theme-color' is undefined and used without a fallback.
How to set the fallback color for the older browsers. And get rid of this error.

why can't we just create a class .link-color { color: #abc } and just apply that class to all link elements? what are the pro's and con's between this way and the way you are presenting? :)
