good choice for NZ but what will there replacement be, the type 31 or type 26 are the only real options. would help if NZ would not be so tight and left and actually do somethng. 1% mlitary budget is extremely low, 1.8% would make a huge differance

Rust seems to be the problem with these vessels.

I susppose the criticism always made about the 2 NZ frigates that the country would never be able to afford to update them and 2 are not enought given reifts, eventualities and out of area deployments has proven only, too true. Now due to the three times extended lengh of the limited Canadian update of the ships and doubtless need for long workup and testing of the ralther unlikely ocmbination of the new UK/RN Sea Ceptor missiles with Austrlian/US tech, the effectiveness of the RNZN and the chance of ever reaching high operationsal standards are questionable. In needs to be stressed my off and on opposition to these ships was essentially that they were gold plated coastguard cutters, ie most of what was being paid for was inefficient Australian industry, employment and shipbuilding and four Meko 200s could have been built in Germany in half the time for the price with the same systems and fit out except for replacing the SEa Sparrow and 127mm ( a slow firing low elevation bombardment weapon) with the a similar armament to the new RN T26 say a 76mm gun and 2/L70 40mm would ahve been just as effective and secondly my view is that what was always lacking in the RNZN and other forces RNZAF and Army was the immediate following of orders with out queston and effective discipline and hierarcial control and the change from Leanders with 250/260 crews to a Anzac with 160/170 was not a sufficient economy to make a RNZN crew more controllable. In my view in the reality of RNZN opeartions the degree of discipline and type that would be effective depends directly to the size of the crew with harsher discipline being required with progressive larger crews. Given harsh discipline has never been particularly presen tin the RNZN since the late 1950s my view that crew size needed to be reduced to about 80/ 90 ( I not defending the discomfort of crews having ot rely on the two OPVs overaldden with crew that size and there dry ship and lack of facilities. I strongly advocated the general concept as a test of the viability of corvette size ships oprating modern a/s helicopters- my real thinking was more in the lines of the Dutch Holland class OPVs) at the max for effective control. On a cruiser the size of the old HMNZS Roylaist effective discipline would probalby have to been nearly homicidal, as in the USN at the time, and it is relevant that the one thing that is never put up or immediately removed from my wikidepia articles and other work on naval topics is on this issue. It has never been possible to published the record of the court martials that occured on the great unregonized transit of HMS/HMNZS Royalist from Singapore to Cairns in 1964 which passed unchalllenged thru areas near Indoneasin bases and the Lombok/ Bali straight pave the way for the third test of putting Victoroious and 2DDG and Frigates thru Lombok. Surely that deseved a OSM.
