Had a cancer pt the the other night who was severely acidotic, Ph 7.06, BE -10, LA 5. Through the night gave 4L LR, 6 Bicarb amps, base excess continued to raise. By the end of my shift BE - 19, pH 7.2, LA 10. Pt on bicarb gtt, levo gtt, not responsive to fluids. Crt, K began to raise. Physician kept referring to BE all night and I was not familiar with the role it played in resuscitation. Thanks for this Tid Bit. BTW patient placed on comfort and passed few hours after my shift.
