Here's what we know of 13-year-old Derek Rosa's life behind bars after allegedly killing his mother in Hialeah.

NBC6 was told he is the youngest of 34 juveniles being held at the new juvenile section at Metro West, and that the rest are 16 and 17 years old.

He's also alone and cannot be with the other children for his own safety, only being allowed to play with staff members.

The department of corrections says they are always watching Rosa because he's considered high profile.

The teen is alone in a cell with a frosted window with no direct view outside, spending 20 hours a day in solitary.

I feel like he snapped because his mom was abusive and with the birth of his sister, his mom became even worse. His family is on his side, which seems like there's so much more here.

This kid supposedly had no previous criminal record, was well-behaved and had good grades. He didn't just kill anyone. He killed his own mother. He had no history of violence. He is not some kind of indiscriminate killer. So out of all the people that he could've killed, why would it be his mother? If his situation at home weren't so bad, why would it occur to him to kill his mother?

A young kid would never kill their parent, especially not their mother. Maybe not for reasons of morality or empathy but for reasons of survival. A child is dependent on their parents. That's why most children's greatest fear is losing their parents. To lose one's parents is to lose comfort, safety and stability. Children know that. This applies even to psychopaths as they have a strong sense of self-preservation. If he were curious about murder, he could've picked a different victim. This was premeditated. It wasn't random. And he knew he'd go to jail. Why would he throw away his freedom just like that? And the family asking for house arrest is raising a red flag. They don't seem concerned that he is violent. I wonder if it's the father side of the family. I wonder if the mother and the biological father separated amicably.
