Tanzania’s largest locally built ship displayed on Lake Victoria

On Sunday, February 12, 2023, Tanzania floated the largest ship in the Great Lakes Region at Port Mwanza, Tanzania in Lake Victoria. According to Tanzania Times, MV Mwanza will traverse Lake Victoria, via Mwanza and Bukoba ports of Tanzania, Kisumu port of Kenya, and Port Bell of Uganda to improve transport among the three nations that share the lake. Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa, the largest tropical lake in the world, and the second-largest freshwater lake in the world after Lake Superior in North America. MV Mwanza is being built by Songoro Marine Transport Limited for $46.6 million; is 93 meters long; will be able to transport 1,200 passengers, 400 tons of cargo, and 20 vehicles; and is 82% complete. As mentioned in Tanzania Times, compartments on the ship are divided into economy, business, and first-class and will have “all creature comforts and modern facilities.” All four ports MV Mwanza will anchor at are connected to railways.
