Actually in earlier times the milk, ghee and honey which were offered to the lingam was offered to the devotees In the form of charnamrit .The things offered get positive making it rich with medicinal properties.

In earlier times the things which offered to the lingam were flowed into canals and streams, which further goes in the fields acting as a fertilizer for soil and crops .

In earlier times there was abundance of milk, ghee, honey, butter etc. That's why this practice was followed later becoming a tradition.
