I'm a sailor and I've been struggling to comprehend the sinking but this helps. How ironic that my own 25 foot sailboat worth a few thousand dollars is almost unsinkable because even if a wind knocks it down, the heavy keel rights the boat before water can pour in. Meanwhile, the fancy superyacht had it's million dollar keel retracted, so the boat just flipped. More money doesn't buy safety from mistakes.

Why ? For some human errors and the misconduct by the kiwi captain, how typical, descendant of poms...what else could you expect ?

There had been noise complaints when trying to sleep with the keel fully extended when anchored

although I agree that it is usually to have the keel down for stability, with that yacht the SOP was keel up when sails down and apparently is the same SOP for the other "sister" yachts

The thing about a water spout is that it changes the volume of the water under the boat. There becomes a big void under the boat & the boat drops down (30-40ft) then the water fills in around the boat. At the same time, the change in air pressure causes the windows to blow out from the inside. Boats cannot survive a direct hit by a waterspout.
