Sicily yacht disaster: Who was the UK tech mogul Mike Lynch?

Mike Lynch, who founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, was made an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006.

In June, he was cleared in the US of conducting a massive fraud relating to an $11bn (£8.64bn) sale to US company Hewlett Packard (HP).

However, HP did win a six-year civil fraud suit against Lynch back in 2022 after the English High Court ruled that he defrauded the firm by manipulating Autonomy’s accounts to inflate its valuation ahead of the takeover.

It was reported that Autonomy’s former vice president of finance Stephen Chamberlain, and a co-defendant on the US case, passed away on Saturday.

I worked at HP when this sale went down.. even at that time we were all thinking, WTF did we just do… the CEO had only been there a year, and he walked away with a $28m package.. new CEO tells us there will be no pay increases because of this, but of course all the top executives got their bonuses…

The irony is that had they plead guilty and done a plea deal they could both be alive in prison and looking at getting out soon. Now after 10 years of fighting they are both dead.
