I lived near a nuclear power plant for pretty much my entire life. Those Whelen Vortexes would be tested quarterly, and I remember being in school thinking rhey were right next to the school. You'd hear the mechanical voice, the dialup, and then eventually the siren. No clue where they were actually installed, but that sound travelled for miles

That Whelen Vortex is literally the sound of my childhood. Every single Wednesday at noon, they'd test these.

They'd use the hi/lo for flooding emergencies (when the dam upstream was exceeding capacity and they were releasing MASSIVE amounts of water)

I can understand how these can be a little unnerving for those not exposed to them. I have lived in NE Oklahoma my whole life and the sirens are tested at noon on Wednesday every week. They also go off about once a week for tornados or severe weather throughout the spring. When you hear them you just check the day of the week and time. If it's not noon on Wednesday, you stop what you're doing and check the weather. All honesty I think they're kinda cool 😂

I remember back in around 2018-2019 when Hurricane Micheal hit Florida, my town had several of these sirens going off because two tornadoes had touched down. Half of the city was forced to evacuate, including my family. The news were on 24/7 in my grandparents’ house, which we stayed at for a month, so we could keep track of the storm. It absolutely terrified me when we heard that our town was destroyed by Micheal’s gruesome winds. And apparently I had gained PTSD from any severe weather watches/warnings afterwards. Idk how I was so chill while watching this, bro. 😭
