I think the reason why spongebob was so memorable is that it was random, yet grounded.
Rules established in universe seem nonsensical outside of it, but as rules they're treated with a lot of respect. As such, reoccuring jokes like the gross-ups and transitions could both distinguis themselves from other media, whilst still having a consistent feel.

Reminder: if we take each episode (or just the three first seasons) as a continuous Canon, then Squidward is over 2000 years old, since he got stuck in the freezer for that long. And since he travelled back in time, to get back, Squidward's younger version is probably still stuck in the freezer, while the now-much-older Squidward is now also among the cast, taking the place of his younger-self.

It would be pretty funny if a new spongebob episode made a reference to the frozen, younger Squidward, who is overseen by everyone around him.
