Actually every location in the Alps is beautiful, not only Berchtesgaden. I served 10 years long with various platoons of the traditional Gebirgsdivision 8 (headquarters was located in Garmisch Patenkirchen), and boy we were regularily once a month chased through any site between the mountains from Berchtesgaden to Oberstdorf (olympic location of ski jump, close to Neuschwanstein ) ... I cursed a lot of being in the Army, especially when forced to train for Biathlon as a non-ski-runner. But looking backwards I can laugh and it was a great time, too. Oh, before I forget: we had an unique badge which you had to earn: Das Edelweiß der Gebirgsdivision 8. In order to get "licenced" to wear the Edelweiß on your barrett or uniform, you had to hike/climb up to an mountain which is higher than 2000 mm above sea level, which was usually the Watzmann for us. Get informed, I think you are an US soldier right? I think you could sign up for the next tour with permission of your Division heaquarters, and then I think you might be allowed to wear the Edelweiß-badge on your mess dress or barret, too
