Vikings: What Did They Eat?
Fearsome warriors and valiant explorers from the rough, unforgiving shores of Scandinavia. But what did these hardy people eat daily, and how did they prepare it? In today's video, we explore the diet of Vikings and their meal preparations.
Did you know that, contrary to popular belief, most Vikings were not warriors? In fact, the majority were farmers. They grew vegetables, fruit, and cereals and cared for animals to provide eggs, milk, cheese, and meat.
Vikings also hunted animals such as rabbits and deer for meat, but their primary meat source was fish. Living near the ocean, they often relied on fishing.
Vikings made bread, but not in ovens. Instead, they shaped the dough into pancake-like forms and cooked it over an open fire in a skillet or pot.
To preserve their meat, they salted or smoked it, removing moisture to prevent spoilage and extend its shelf life.
