Louie had a pad and sticks in his hospital room at the end because he had to do his rudiments an hour every day .

I was fortunate enough to see Louis Bellson play in 1985. It was Zildjian day in Dallas. You can find that very day here on YouTube. He was playing Remo pre-tuned drumheads system. There was also that day Tommy Aldridge, Simon Phillips, Tony Williams, Vinnie Colaiuta. Great memories.

I met him at a community be college I attended for music. He played a show in the auditorium. Super nice guy, absolutely cordial. A true gentleman and a scholar. His much-younger wife was his very-enthusiastic promoter/marketer. She was great.

My dad took me as a kid a few times to see him play at a little jazz club in Chicago. I'll never forget it

I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Bellson back stage at the desert inn hotel in Las Vegas back in 1980 when he had an engagement there. I got his autograph and a pair of his signature drumsticks. His playing was amazing! I’ll never forget that night or how nice and kind he was to a high school drummer.

You are the most interesting demonstrator I 've ever seen. Thank you for explaining this so easily that we "non drummists" can understand - I agree with Craig Renner, you truly are a human metronome. Thank you.

When I was a little boy and finally got the bounce on the double stroke roll I was so excited I couldn’t sleep that night👍🏻 And the rest is history. I got my NARD certificate in 1969.

Oh, man, SO MUCH NOSTALGIA with this clip! This was the video my first teacher sent me home with after my first lesson (24 years ago this week!). I remember trying to practice along with Louie here, but I had one of those “sound off” pads with zero bounce, so it became super frustrating really fast.
I remember my old man noticing how peeved I was, and he looked around and grabbed our kitchen cutting board, and said “here try this.”
That was an instant game changer, and the next time through Bellson’s exercise here, I could play a roll!

Imho Louie was one of the most accomplished drummers ever recorded in this realm. He is certainly my favorite of all time and I still marvel at his musicality on the drumset back when no one else did what he was doing. Yeah, he could swing, but his double bass prowess and ghosting techniques were and still are as good as it gets and HE originated many of the groove feels made famous. He was a masterful drummer and teacher. Thanks Louie. 🥁🎵💚

Thanks for linking the full video, most YT-Shorts creators don't include the links, or even reference the name of the original videos👍

I love Louis, I think perhaps he was the first double bass drum player 🤘

I've been aware of double sticking for many years. This is the first time I've heard anyone else discuss it.
