What Aristotle Knew About Oligarchy That We Forgot

How do a wealthy few come to hold power, and why does it matter? Aristotle addressed these very questions over 2,300 years ago, and his insights remain surprisingly relevant.

In this video, we dive into Aristotle's work, Politics, where he explores different forms of government, including oligarchy—when the rich are in control. Aristotle wasn’t just speculating; he analyzed 158 constitutions from Greek city-states and beyond, offering profound insights into how governments truly function.

Building on our last video on tyranny, we now shift our focus to oligarchy, another form of government Aristotle found troubling. We'll look at how leadership based on merit can gradually transform into rule by the wealthy, and the various ways this transition occurs. Aristotle’s sharp observations allow us to recognize the subtle ways in which wealth can influence governance, even in systems that appear democratic.

We’ll also explore Aristotle’s thoughts on the downfall of oligarchies. How do these regimes crumble when wealth often drowns out the voices of ordinary citizens? Aristotle’s analysis of the connection between money and power remains strikingly applicable today, offering a timeless perspective on political dynamics that still shape our world.

Aristotle warned about the dangers of wealth influencing governance over 2, 300 years ago. In today's world, do you think we're still seeing the same patterns he described? How does money impact modern politics, and what can be done to ensure fairness in leadership?

Concentrated wealth and power will
become anti-social over time and bc
the needs of the society are not be met,
unrest and instability will rise. The only
way forward is thru a high level of engagement
from the populace to demand change that lasts
and accountability and transparency.
Secrecy benefits those with ulterior motives.
