WARNING - Many people in the comments below are experiencing issues with SteamOS 3.6. You may want to avoid updating until we hear more or until there are some hotfixes.

People always say if I want a PC handheld with more power then there are plenty of options, but to me there aren't. I cannot play most of the games I enjoy on my steam deck without the trackpads, and nobody else seems interested in including them. Hopefully that'll change soon (I think I saw something about another one with trackpads but I don't think it's released yet). Fingers crossed.

I made the switch to the GPD Win Mini a while ago, but we handheld gamers owe the Steam Deck so much for making handheld PCs become a more serious consideration taken by developers, Valve included. This channel and others like it are still relevant to me, especially since I hope to use SteamOS eventually, and Steam as a launcher/retailer/controller modifier has become a game changer for handhelds, Steam Deck or not

I think I'm a member of the "This'll do..." group of Steam Deck users. I have been incredibly happy with my Top-tier Gen1 SD, and as much as I'd love to have the better screen of the OLED (i have crummy eyesight), I've never felt that the LCD was a problem. I don't feel like I need a true Gen2 device, at least until VRR, and even then I might still need to look past it to whether or not the SD GEn2 gets ACTUAL hardware bumps. I also have some quality-of-life hardware updates (2TB SSD, clear-back with integrated APU heatsink) that I'm not really interested in migrating or replacing on a newer unit. I'm perfectly happy where I am, and with the wealth of content the Deck supports, I'm not getting any FOMO.

With undervolting, cpu underclocks, and gpu overclocks, I’m getting better temps battery and performance compared to stock. I am AMAZED at how valve keeps pushing this hardware further.

I dont understand how someone has not brought to market a 90-100 Wh battery that fits the steam mold but includes a back plate with a small bump to double the size available. it would still be secure and would ideally double the battery life of most users. Everyone I know with a steam deck already pays 60-70 bucks for a solid external battery pack for that exact reason. the market is there its just waiting. There are several million potential customers that would make that leap today, particularly if its plug and play.

Steam Deck : huge update with 3.6.19
Switch: 5.0 has improvements we won't tell you (it's DRM) and you can expect a real update when you buy another console

I just updated to 3.6 and my deck is working fine. I play cursor games quite often and they’re working fine too. Obviously some people are having issues, but it’s not everyone it seems

I think the software is honestly more important. Getting games running smoothly and efficiently is important. Getting them to run just as well on other handhelds is even more important. When they released the Steam Deck, they were really releasing a new operating platform.

We need Steam OS for PC's. Windows has become a disaster in configuration and privacy invasion. Heck the stability of Steam OS beats Windows hands - down!

Arch and plasma updates are really the most exciting, imo.

My only gripe with the Steam Deck is the docking: it's just a stand and you have to plug a cable on top. Best console dock so far is the WiiU/3DS, though I would like an on/off switch on that dock so I don't have to unplug it, ever.
Having the option between USB and docking means more connectors so I get the choice to not do that, but you could instead have a detachable USB-to-dock adapter in a groove, so when the dock adapter is on it's flush at the bottom (with guide holes) and when you remove the adapter, it's a small hole and the USB plug goes at the bottom. This allows for custom docks with custom adapters, in case anyone wants to try new ideas! (magnetic, anyone?)
You'd have to sell separate adapters in case you misplace it, of course.
Oh, why docking? HDMI+mouse+keyboard. The Deck is my second gaming PC.

Spending all this time developing the base of SteamOS really would make it worth getting SD2 when it rolls out someday. I have sold my laptop for SD and im never going back.

So croc being on consoles already kills the DRM free argument, but even beyond that, Steam absolutely supports DRM free games. It's up to the developer if they want to incorporate DRM on their release, Steam just makes it easy to do if the developer wants it.

And the thing about GoG being totally DRM free, while true, is a bit misleading. While you can download an offline installer to archive till the end of time, which I highly recommend if you have the extra storage space laying around, games can still be delisted from the GoG store, so they can disappear. Not even GoG has perpetual rights to games on their store (except their own games of course) so it's only yours forever if you archived the installer somewhere safe.

I'm not trying to argue for Steam or against GoG, I absolutely buy games on both stores. I just think the perception of GoG being superior because they talk big about their DRM free system is not fully understood. Croc could absolutely have been on both stores and been DRM free on both of them, reaching a potentially wider audience that way.

I see a lot of comments about the issues that this is causing and honestly that is to be expected. I am thankful people are letting us know and I also want to say that I hope we are all patient with the OS, we all know Valve will be dishing out updated to fix these issues in the up coming days and so on.

I usually don’t notice the “battery life improvement” updates, but the reduced battery drain on idle is actually significant

I was hoping for the long promised easy dual booting Windows and Steam OS.

I remember a lot of people mentioning installing windows on the deck isnt feasible without bluetooth because they use bluetooth controllers. I think thats a HUGE feature

I like your game recommendations, whenever you mention lesser known games there's always a bunch that pique my interest
