They didn't gained freedom through "song", strictly speaking. The Soviets saw the defiance of the whole country in there and understood (or interpreted) that they'd have to wholeness of the country standing against their domination.
It was a show of force in a way, since the underlying threat would be physical in case the Soviets would try to punish them.
