The castle was originally a fortified house built by the Cossonay-Prangins in the middle of the 12th centurycentury. The Counts of Savoy took it in 1293 and transformed it in important way as early as 1360 (addition of the two towers on the lake side and, no doubt, of an inner courtyard). In 1536, during the passage to the Reformation, the House of Savoy, driven by the Bernese, leaves Nyon. The castle was built in 1804 by the City of Nyon in the newly created Canton of Vaud. The building now houses the courts, communal council assemblies, prisons and, since 1888, the museum.
