Why is no one talking about Perma-lance gigs? Best of both worlds.

okay so i got a job offer vs freelance. my issue with the full time job was commute, hours, pay was worse for hours, management would be stressful on me, and if i got fired at the end id have to start over in freelance all over again so i didnt take it. ill probably never get to work on spiderman or coke commercials but i think im okay with that in the long run. if there was an agency that could replicate the same quality of life i get through freelancing i would take it but so far i havent found a job that could supply that especially in my city

Interesting points made in both sides. I think permanent roles also offer more security when it comes to sick pay, some healthcare benefits and the impact on getting a mortgage. It would be good to hear the counter arguments for those.

5:00 Ooh gotta disagree with Scott that you don’t have to worry about marketing yourself as a full-timer. Big or small, I think bad things can happen to you (or the business) in a business that you can’t control. Gotta have that portfolio at the ready just in case, even on staff when you or the business might need to stop operations based on the bosses decision. You just have to market yourself towards employers, not companies. Very, very similar.

Do we need to distinguish between "freelancer" and "independent operators" to have this discussion? Because if you're freelancing as a "hired gun" for another agency then that can be closer to full-time work then being an independent operator who has their own direct to client projects. Also there are quite a few regulations that studios can put in place onto freelancers which can be restrictive. I think the debate is flawed without addressing this distinction.

i also just think being a contractor is the best of both worlds

Any tips for getting a job as a in house motion designer?

Im currently a graphic designer but i want to focus more on motion design (which I currently do a bit of at work) only thing is rn id rather work in house* instead of at a agency.
Iv considered freelance but i need a steady paycheck 😭

* by in house I mean like how Duolingo has their own team of animators and they don’t take on outside clients/projects
