Silt Crisis: Clearing the Chaos

Silt Crisis: Clearing the Chaos

Right here, workers are dealing with debris and silt clogging this sluice gate. Unlike gates that manage water levels, sluice gates clear out sediment and debris. When they jam, they can't function, causing serious problems for dam operations and potentially leading to chaos.

Silt accumulation is a dam's worst enemy! When silt builds up, it blocks the flow of water, causing all kinds of problems. Look at that silt flow! It starts slowly but then rushes out. If not managed, this silt can cause serious damage to the dam and the environment downstream.

Blocked tunnels mean big trouble! Imagine a tunnel choked with rocks and wood. Workers sometimes have to use extreme measures, like steel poles, to dig through the rubble just to get things moving again. It’s a tough job and dangerous too!

After eight long years, this dam can finally produce hydroelectricity again! It took that long to clear out about half a million cubic meters of silt! When gates are clogged, everything comes to a standstill, including power generation.

Silt is really precious. It is what makes the soil naturally fertile, highly fertile.

It would be a miracle if the writer on this upload knew anything.

This was a great video to watch on the toilet! 😂

Looking at all the comments, maybe this helps:
1. Power relies on head (difference between top of reservoir and turbine elevation) and water flow rate.
2. Reservoirs are designed to store water over time so that there will always (hopefully) be an adequate supply during wet and dry seasons. The larger the reservoir capacity, the less reliance on the upstream river's possibly inconsistent seasonal flow.
3. Reservoir silting is a natural consequence of blocking the natural flow of the river. The average water velocity slows and suspended soil particles will settle out. The term silting here can mean a wide range of particle sizes from sand (~1 mm diameter) to clay (micro meters)..Some of it may be fertile, some of it may not, depends on what is up-river.
4. Silt removal is important to maintain the volume of the reservoir, and pass some along to maintain a better sediment balance downstream, better for fish and wildlife. It is a "maintenance" task which is often overlooked or deferred due to cost (short-sighted) and becomes increasingly difficult with every year of delay.
5. Many dams perform flood control and irrigation supply, so there are competing demands on managing the reservoir.

You don't have the faintest clue how hydroelectricity dams work. Silt DOES NOT affect power generation. It affects dam water capacity only.

A pause of 8 years in a hydroelectric power plant. Yeah, right. 😂
Plus, you do know that a power plant uses water from the top of the dam and not the silty stuff from the bottom?
If not, look up some videos about it on YT . It could really help you. 😊

This reminds me of my morning restroom times. Starts slow, then after my coffee, i can stop it.

The first part looks dangerous for those workers!

That's what happens to dams when they don't hit fiber for too long

Reminds me of emptying out day after Christmas 😊

Silt also builds up behind dams, taking up valuable water storage capacity. One of our local reservoirs has been drained to remove decades of silt and allow repairs and up grades to our over 100 year old structure. It's been over due.

I remember goin on a ftx for a week, coming back, having to listen to the symphony of destroying toilets😂

Forget dams even house water tanks can build up silts. As I refurbish old or unused buildings have often found out that. When my team tries to clean up the tanks just a spray of mud comes out.

8 years to clear that, the overtime on that bill must have been insane.

Didn't know that. 😅 Thanks for sharing.💝
