Lesvos is full of geological monuments, as well as areas of natural beauty and ecological value. The monument that stands out on the island is the Petrified Forest , which has been designated a preserved natural monument (UNESCO World Heritage site). In addition, the island of Lesvos has a number of archaeological sites and monuments, which with their beauty have been a source of inspiration for artists, painters, writers and poets.
The city of Mytilene (hence the island's other common name) is built on the south-eastern tip of the island and on top of seven hills. As a modern city and an administrative, commercial-economic and spiritual center with a population of 33,523 inhabitants it is the headquarters of the island, the University of the Aegean , the Regional Unit of Lesbos and the North Aegean Region, as well as the Ministry of the Aegean . Important towns of the island are Agia Paraskevi with 2,053 inhabitants, Agiasos with 2,001, Kalloni with 2,161, Polichnitos with 2,041, Plomari with 2,930, etc. Lesvos is considered the homeland of ouzo , due to the extensive involvement of the inhabitants in distilling. Several well-known ouzo brands originate from the island. The island is also famous for Kalloni sardines (the well-known papalina), olive oil , and cheese products.
In September 2012, the entire island of Lesvos joined the World Network of UNESCO Geoparks .
