Loop review: mobile payments that work

Ellis Hamburger reviews the Loop Fob and Loop ChargeCase, two devices that store your credit cards and let you pay at over 90 percent of credit card terminals in the US. Loop works more places than Google Wallet ever did, but does that mean it's finally time to toss our wallets in the trash? More from The Verge:

Am I the only one who had a moment of awe and then laughter at 3:17 when Ellis says "With a big marketing push from Samsung or another top phone maker, Loop could become well known enough..."

Foreshadowing much? This is priceless.

On my last trip to New York City paying with my phone required an additional two minutes of arguing. Even at places that had the "Apple Pay" sticker near the terminal.

Love the little touch at the end with hamburger eating a hamburger.

It's illegal to accept swipes here in Norway unless chip is for some reason impossible (Broken chip reader on terminal and such) and if you can't accept chip you're required to fix it as soon as possible.
In short: Practical or not, I can't use it.

Nice idea, but still gotta keep working on it. Stay on it loop, you're almost there.

The thing with these.. things... is that you have all of your credit cards in one place, it doesnt just add some convienence to the regular transactions, it bulks all of your credit cards in one place and lets you change between them seamelessly. Its not aout drop with the system and create something new (well, maybe in part it is), its about making it easier for us and pave the road for new technologies to be used everywhere while we still drop the old ones.

"And the answers still a resounding NO". I will never use anything other than swiping credit card until they figure out how to make it as simple as a swipe of lightweight card. NEVER.

Most other countries around the world use chip and PIN technology, in the UK swiping a card feel almost as antiquated as playing a video from a VCR and chip and PIN technology is making its way to the US. I can't see loop lasting very long in the US market.

They're solving a problem that doesn't really exist.

Seems like a good idea, except for the fact it's one more thing to carry around, which is bulkier and heavier than a couple cards.

Coin is similar and solves a lot of the pain points of traditional POS.

Also make sure copying your card is not illegal, this is not worth going to jail over.

I carry only one credit card.. i think its still more convenient for me to stick that card out and swipe it.. i think this only solves the problem of "holy crap i have a dozen cards and i dont know which one to use"

What about Chip & Pin cards in countries outside the US?

US will probably soon change to the chip cards and EU will move on to NFC cards and when that happens the NFC will be the primary way to pay and the chip would then be the secondary. After that most retailers won't even take magnet strip cards since at least in Finland there's usually only 2 ways to pay, chip and magnet. Next it will be NFC and chip.

If things like this is well known enough, will shops trust it to be placed next to a payment terminal ?
I mean, even if it's safe, I wouldn't want to trust my knowledge of the tech that it couldn't be abused.
