Maldives: 2 Ministers Quit After Getting Suspended For Insulting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Two Maldivian ministers resigned on Tuesday after being suspended for making "derogatory remarks" about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. President Mohamed Muizzu had suspended three ministers in January, one of whom reportedly called Modi a "clown." The former ministers had criticised Modi following his promotion of the Indian territory of Lakshadweep. Since taking office, Muizzu has been aiming to mend relations with India. The resignations, attributed to "personal reasons", occurred just before a possible visit by Muizzu to New Delhi and followed a visit by India's Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar. This was Jaishankar's first trip to the Maldives since the country expelled Indian troops in May. Muizzu has softened his stance against India and pledged not to disrupt the regional balance by replacing Indian troops with Chinese forces.
