We're moving on our sailboat. This is how it feels. #8

10 days to the move, we are getting the boat ready for us to move onboard!

I was secretly hoping that Ryan would have put the boat back in order while I was away, sailing across the North Sea. Nope! It had a lot of work left to do…

Coming home, the reality of what’s coming hit me hard. I started to process what it meant to leave the life that we have built here in Stockholm, and shed a tear. I had not imagined that leaving our apartment was going to make me sad. My mind found every way possible to distract myself from processing the emotions involved with such a move.

The next day, we were at the boat, starting the move.

I found a lot of the things that we had packed at the end of the 2017 season, which of some of my favorite items: the pirate hat and our French and American courtesy flags.

We ended up at Ikea, where Ryan hunt for boxes big enough to contain his Millennium Falcon Lego, as well as the rest of his huge collection. Ikea’s biggest box wasn’t nearly big enough, and we left as soon as we could.

I bought a knife magnet, that will hold the knives in a corner of the galley, and make them more accessible and safer to access. Very happy with how the galley is turning!

I found myself wrestling with the cushions in order to put the covers back on, and play a game of Tetris to figure out where went what cushion.

At the end of the day(s), Polar Seal is starting to look like herself again. We are exhausted, stressed, and a little panicked about the life change.

We are also super excited about it!!! I can’t wait to visit new countries, meet new friends and visit my hometown in my own sailboat. Pretty cool I think :)

Ryan realized right as we were speaking that the tour is passing through my hometown right when we plan to be there, which will be the occasion for him to realize one of his lifetime dreams: spectating the tour!

Oh man... Ryan channeled me with the “afraid I’ll fail” comments. Also the comment about others thinking we’re just hanging around in the sun, all the time, and not realizing how much work it is. I get so irrationally annoyed by that misperception. But I do love my boat life! You guys are doing a great job!!!

There is a trick to put your cushion covers on easier: Use a vacuum cleaner & plastic that you find at the hardware store. You will wrap the cushion in the plastic then suck the air out with the vacuum cleaner, then you will have a flat cushion which you can easily slide into the cover. The trick is to know how to place the plastic over the cushion so that you can easily remove the plastic once you have the cushion in the cover. There are many you tube videos on this under Upholstery.

Sophie don’t panic everything will work out, you two have a wonderful goal to go sailing, and live out your dreams and adventures. Just keep your sense of humour and focus. Living on a yacht will frustrate you but the end results will outweigh all of those issues. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⛵️

The honesty of your story is so refreshing and compelling. Sophie, you have a gift relaying the “ feeling” of this journey through your editing and visual storytelling. Carry on you two, and thanks for bringing us along for the adventure.

Just started following your channel - love it, really helpful for an aspiring, dare I say it, sailor! I vacationed in Quimper in the late 1980s, had a great time in Brittany and then to the art galleries of Paris ❤️

When you go up the mast, take a long line with you tied to the bosun's chair. When you realize you've forgotten the pliers, your assistant places them in an Ikea bag, and you hoist them up.

We're about 3 months behind you, moving aboard mid August for a Sept 1 departure.

Sophie you have a wonderful name and you tell such great stories! Don't worry about the future..there will be tough times but there will be amazing times that will make it all worth it! Keep pressing on. Tell Ryan to switch focus from what he can't do to what he can do. This pool of skills will only get bigger. Cheers

That listed you rattled off at the beginning would go great on post it notes. Visual reminder of what needs done and then discard them as you complete them or move them from one side of the boat to the other. Will give you a great sense of accomplishment.

Great video, thanks ! It is always a lot of work and often stressful when you decide to leave the mainstream of a predictable lifestyle and venture off to a life of adventure full of unknowns. The alternative lifestyle and lack of certainty leads, in my opinion, to a much more rewarding life ! Good luck !
