This movie sounds like the equivalent of staring at yourself in the mirror with very little light. You start to see things 👀

This movie perfectly emulates what it feels like to have a nightmare as a child. I grew up having lots of nightmares and the occasional night terror waking with sleep paralysis. There's a feeling like you're not alone and there's something just out of sight watching you. The dread you feel in that state is exactly what I felt watching this movie. I had literal goosebumps the entire second half and I was anxious the next two days
I will never watch this movie again, but it will forever be my #1 horror movie

What I love about Skinamarink that no other film has been able to accomplish: it makes you feel like a child watching a horror movie alone at night in a pitch black basement. When the movie ends, you realize that your parents are still out at a restaurant and it’s 11:30 PM. Then it 12:30 AM but they are still not home. Anxiety levels begin to skyrocket. You hear a vehicle outside and see the high beams but the car does not pull into your driveway because it isn’t them.

Reminder to those who want to see the movie but don't know if it's playing near you, check your local independent theatres! I thought it wasn't playing near me at all until I went on an independent theatre near me's site and they'll be showing it at the end of this week for me. I have seen the leak (I was one of those people who thought it wasn't going to get distributed), so I'm happy to be able to buy a ticket to support the director as well.

For me the cartoons was actually the positive and comforting aspect in the movie, so when the third act was starting, and everything went really quiet . . . All the comfort is leaving me in a second, specially with that pictures scene.

When they let you look into the dark room without having a jumpscare where you expect one but dont get one. Thats what i love

This movie is the epitome of Love it or Hate it.

I found it very unnerving and it made me feel like I was watching something I shouldn't have been.
That said, as creeped out and unsettled as I felt, I don't think i'd ever sit through it again.

It sounds like you had the same take away I had, being so immersed!

I saw this yesterday alone in my house in complete darkness at midnight. I have never felt scared like this since I was a kid watching horror films, truly refreshing. Unfortunately, it is a bit of a drag (too long) but some of the moments are so psychologically tense it makes it up for me. Felt like scared kid again 😅.

i just saw this in theatres. i thought the vibe and the tension it created was incredible. unfortunately i felt like a couple of the jump scares were a little cheap (literally “scary face pop up on screen”) and that it felt like it didn’t really know where to go at times. especially towards the end there were moments that felt like backtracking instead of escalation. it created such an incredible atmosphere but i felt like they didn’t really know what to DO with it

This movie forces you to look down a dark hallway and asks, “Did see that?” even if there’s nothing there.

Big wow. Saw it tonight and I’m leaving the lights on forever :)

I love/hate hate hate that movie and am now completely obsessed by it! Unrewatchable.... but no need... Because forever engraved in my mind!
Keep up the great work Emma!
Happy Spooky 2023!

I watched the first half at 2am alone with the volume up, and I adored the tension and mood it created. It reminded me of the way David Lynch holds onto empty dark spaces and frames the horror in everyday happenings.

Just purchased a Shudder sub to watch it with surroundsound all the way through!

I am opening this at my cinema this weekend, I am so excited! Glad you got a screener, and that you waited until this had a release. It was a bit disheartening to see so much buzz with $0 going to the film.

Our cinema has really bright stair lights, so I am going to cover them with electrical tape as much as a safely can to make it darker in the theatre!

I definitely felt like the movie I was watching was kinda through the dying mind/memories of a 4 year old (now in a coma from the fall down the stairs that we're led to believe wasn't serious) - trapped within his head, facing the ceiling, no longer physically able to move or use the toilet (which disappears along with any way out of his home/mind), and the only constant within his memories - his sister - and their time spent closely together, eating cereal, watching cartoons, playing with Legos, ect. - is the clearest memories he possesses; until she fades from his mind as well.
(I feel there could be themes of neglect/divorce? running thru as well.)

Or I'm completely wrong. :)
Anywho, I loved the film.

The last shot of the film is one of the scariest things I’ve seen in YEARS.

Even the trailer is terrifying. That voice repeating “in this house…..” is so damn unsettling

I absolutely loved it! It scared me out of my mind, and I'm glad I have the excuse of supporting it to see it again, because otherwise I wouldn't revisit it for a long time, and it deserves at least one rewatch. I feel like a channel like Collative Learning could do an intense two hour breakdown of this film, and it would still be mysterious after. I forgot that someone recommended Heck to me awhile back. I'll definitely be checking that out tonight. Great review! Glad you liked it!

I'm so excited to finally watch Skinamarink I've been hearing so much about it for months and the most interesting way I've heard somebody describe it was a Liminal Space Horror and that peaked my intrest so much more. I'm buying a ticket tonight to watch it this upcoming Friday and usual great review Emma!!!

You need to be truly immersed for this film to work. I watched it under the worst possible circumstances last year, which severly weakened my impression (will rewatch if possible). It's an interesting film, but bound to be EXTREMELY polarizing.
