SPOILER - Lawrence Fishburne's character is not real. Saw this - "When Franks threatened to shoot him if he didn’t continue the mission, John said he rather be shot than go back into hibernation. But of course suicide-by-Franks can’t work, because Franks and his gun aren’t real. So John’s mind, having created a phantom to keep him on-mission, now rationalizes a way out that doesn’t feel like giving up, a chance to get the thing he said he missed most: “fresh air”."
