Totally agree that 100% of the budget should go to the editor.

The more I get serious in editing for YouTube, the more I respect documentary and Hollywood editors... It's time consuming and really comes down to art, learning the rules and breaking them sometimes. Thanks so much for this as always...

Mark, I appreciate your ability to critique your own previous works in service of helping yourself and others get better. Hats off for that!

Love Lewis' tip about being an invisible editor, doing too much often makes an edit tacky and takes the attention away from from the story. Thanks guys!

Yes to being an invisible editor! It was a little hard for me to gain confidence into branching out in this career path because of all the flashy edits that weren’t my style. Then I found a client who was pretty much looking for an invisible and not flashy editor so that was a big confidence boost.
Getting away from cutting to the beat is a little tricky for me as my introduction to editing was cutting AMV’s back in high school 😆
But yes, allowing shots to breathe is super important.

The most impressive advice here is to not always and only cut to the beat because it’s there. I’m editing an image video for a local barbershop at the moment and I find myself cutting to the beat over and over. I think I’ll have to duplicate my project to mess around a bit with the edit. Thanks for this video

Great information here. 2 things.

1. Duplicating your timeline is great practice, just llike CMD+J in Photoshop being step one to processing a photo.
2. Finding a balance of editing to the beat, but also with story in mind is a difficult balance that I'm trying to find at this point in my career.

I love the approach on editors needing to stop drawing attention. Editors needs to craft the story for others! not show their skills. Love it!

Love the tip about copying sequences!! I usually do it on the timeline, but that way is much better and way less messy! See you in Toronto in a few weeks!

Can’t wait for the course. Ive been looking for other creators to help me transition to the documentary/storytelling process. I’ve binged probably 15 of your videos today, taking notes, and out of everyone else, your videos allowed me to truly digest and understand the the processes that go into documentary film making.

The passion you have for what you do spreads to your viewers and motivates us. So thank you, for helping me and everyone else become better story tellers, editors, all while ensuring that we remember why we started in the first place 🙏

The audio pop happens because there is a waveform break, where the waveform, at the sample level, goes from one level to another, in that instant. It doesn't have to be loud, just a break in the waveform.

Great point on editing to and not editing to the beat. Paul Hirsch (Empire Strikes Back Editor) had a good take on that as well in his book. Basically, don't do it. Edit slightly before or after the beat which helped give more impact to the shot.

Also, editing to every beat etc. can get predicitable really quick to an audience and that can induce boredom if things are too predictable!

Great vid Mark! Thanks
