It is true that sending humans to Mars would be very prestigious, but I think we have more pressing problems keeping the spaceship we already have got, in a survivable condition. I also firmly believe that the biggest obstacle to going to Mars, would be the astronauts surviving the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation.

The combined force of the planetary governments have never been able to leave the atmosphere of the Earth in the modern era, even as our ISS sits within Earth's atmosphere... how then, nearly 50 years ago, were we able to not only breach the Van Allen Radiation belt, burst theough Earth's atmosphere, but transmit LIVE FOOTAGE back to Earth in real time??
