Many years ago I took an introductory human development course from Dr. Nelson. That course literally changed the trajectory of my life as he talked about healthy family relationships and I learned that there was a better way to raise a family and how we treat our children does matter. It was a stepping stone I needed. He began the class sharing a story about how parents had treated a child, the dysfunction in that family setting. It was almost as if he was talking about my life and the dysfunction in my upbringing, which I'm sure is the norm for millions. I had never even considered there was a different better way for a family to be. Here I am 15 years later with 6 kids, a lot of personal healing along the way, and doing my best to raise a loving family built on healthy attachment. Dr. Nelson is one of the people who changed my life. I love these chapters and podcasts and their focus on family relationships and human development. Thanks for all your efforts. What a positive difference you are making.

I love Dr Nelson! He’s so good at his stories. Very clear and calm. I learned much from his personal stories.

When I told someone I was an introvert, he challenged me which made me think. He said introverts and extroverts are constructs invented by social scientists (like psychologists) in order to place people in different boxes. I think he’s right. I actually have characteristics of both types and so does everyone else. Just sharing.

I just found out this morning that my grandson (Orren Jack) is in the same house/apartment in Virginia as your son John. They are not companions but sharing living space! I was excited! I love followHIM and listen every week with scriptures open, taking notes. I feel the past 4 years with followHim has deepened my testimony tremendously. I'm a convert of 40ish years but the past 4 have been life changing, learning so much that I never would have gotten on my own. Thank you so much for all you do!

Thank you brother Nelson. Your description of being an introvert opened a deeper understanding and appreciation of the way I am and have always been. You described me to a tee. Thank you…

I have a husband and son who are text book introverts, and your explanation was SO spot on! They are not shy, they just have to choose and adjust to feel comfortable around others. Thank you.

I love his acknowledging Mormon’s including characters who played a smaller but important role in the stories. I agree that that speaks to his being observant of everyone.

I want so much to be like Brother Nelson and my Savior Jesus Christ . It is so very difficult to not be resentful and angry when injustices are happening at every turn. Stand in Holy places and think Celestial, we are all doing the best we can.

35:35 It doesn't surprise me that Elder Gong would do that. He exudes such genuine love and concern, especially for those who are down.

This is an important discussion about the way our spirits and bodies are intertwined. In Doctrine and Covenants we read that all commandments are spiritual. I now have a greater understanding about the father’s role as protector in the family. As my husband’s partner in leadership, I need to demonstrate the protecting power of righteousness as well.

I took Human Development from Dr Nelson! Every day I came out of that class feeling as though I had learned something profound, both intellectually and spiritually. He is intelligent, and even more importanly, unendingly kind and nuanced in his consideration. Also, he's a Star Trek fan!

23 years ago I sat down on my first day of college in Dr. Nelson's Child Development class. Who would have known that I had sat down next to my future husband. I'll be forever grateful for the instruction given during that semester, and am ever more grateful today for the insights he has given both times being on your podcast. On this side of parenting, I certainly wish I had taken better notes back then, so getting these jewels of instruction now is so helpful.

I live in California. Where we live my kids are of only a handful of active youth in our ward. It's been really hard as they have been going through their teenage yrs to not have other youth in the church that are active to be around and be an example to each other. It doesn't even have to be another country for there to be little support for youth.
