A quick video to demonstrate how to make sambal belacan. Sambal belacan is a traditional Malay side dish that compliments any meal, very popular in South East Asia.
It consist of red and green chili padi (aka Bird's Eye Chilli), belacan (shrimp paste), some warm water and lastly lime juice to give it that tangy flavour.
Sambal belacan is often eaten with rice and Ulam, a form of mix vegetable commonly found in SEA. It gives the food its' spicy "Ummph!" or "kick" to an otherwise bland dish of rice and vegetables.
Be warned: It is extremely hot & spicy so use it sparingly.

Thank you for the recipe... I got the belacan from an online store which is selling Penang Specialties Products called Memento Hovel.
I use it to cook kangkung belacan, petai balacan etc... It is so delicious !

Cili hijau, merah, bawang, belacan, limau nipis perah, gula sikit, garam, ajinomoto sedikit shj. baru padu.. kalau sy tambah cili hijau dgn cili merah yg besar tu bg warna dia meriah.. sbb cili yg besar tu tak pedas..

@arrancargrimjaww Just fry the belacan aka shrimp paste without oil as we wanna make it as dry as possible. I think thai shrimp paste will do just fine, provided you fry it till dry. One tip, maybe can add equal amounts of large red chillis and large green chilis to the ingredients as it will tone down the spicyness abit. The ones that I made here was feaking hot! Just do't use too much chilli padi ok. Mix well with some ordinary large chillies.

That is so Thai - Malay style. I cant eat very spicy foods ><.
I would prefer to use fresh large red & green chillies with a little bird's eye chillies.
Sometimes to make it milder - i would add bell peppers / capsicums. makes a nice dip ( almost salsa like ) for chips and celery / carrot sticks

should add in a pinch of sugar & salt, a tablespoon of asam jawa. Perfect

Poor production, the lime seeds are not part of the ingredient because they are bitter. Depending on the limes, kalamansi skin is sometimes added/shredded in for the flavor and it's not bitter. Salt and sugar to taste...or better still MSG.
